Kintsu Handmade is a ceramic restoration workshop located in Milan. The project was devised by Anita Cerrato, restorer and writer, and Giancarlo Bozzani, designer and painter, who shared a passion for the refined Japanese aesthetic. In their atelier in Via Vignola 5, they create objects and furnishings of the highest quality, employing only original Japanese materials: from pottery to the precious urushi lacquer and marufun gold. Each piece is exclusive and unique: from artefacts created employing the maki-e technique, designed to feature ever-different patterns inspired by traditional themes, to ceramic pieces restored with the original Kintsugi technique. These pieces are restored abiding by the Japanese tradition and aesthetic, based upon the idea of impermanence, simplicity and asymmetry. An imperfect beauty, able to breathe new life into any object.

After working for many years inside the workshops of Milan’s best master restorers, expert conservator Anita Cerrato first approached the “Kintsugi” technique about 20 years ago. Since then, she has been bringing ceramic and porcelain artistic objects back to life, skilfully re-assembling broken or damaged pieces using lacquer, gold and silver leaf, according to this ancient Japanese technique dating back to the 15th Century. She is one of the best “kinsù” artisans in Italy. Aside from working in her studio, for years this extraordinary artisan has also been doing a lot of volunteer work, teaching inside a psychiatric hospital’s rehabilitation centre in Brescia, and holding workshops for children: not only mending broken objects, but also helping people heal the scars of the soul.
