For over 30 years, Maria Elisa Leboroni has been pursuing xylography, a wood engraving technique allowing to print several copies of the same drawing.
In her “Xilocart” workshop in Perugia, she performs masterly etchings by hand, on specially selected woods. The printing press process reproduces the artist’s fantasy on paper, and an accurate ink mixing leads to the chosen colour tones. By superimposing several woods with different hues, multi-coloured woodcuts can be obtained, with chiaroscuro effects of a rare beauty.
Along with xylographic works, the workshop displays a multifaceted collection of artisanal creations like writing paper, photo albums and bookplates, allowing the client to entirely customise any product.

I have loved xylography since childhood. I also experimented widely with the tools I found at home in my father's toolkit. He used to make models of sailboats, and I carefully tried not to get hurt with the small sharp gouges which I now see in Mrs Leboroni's hands. The difference is that she is very good both at drawing and at turning drawings into “plates”, and also makes bespoke creations for every possible occasion, so that I wish no celebration may ever go by without any of her cards to send!
