Judith Sotriffer is a craftswoman who makes wooden dolls. The craft of wooden toys is a typical tradition of Val Gardena, in South Tirol. It dates back to the 18th century, and has been disappearing since the early 30s. Every family was specialized in the making of a particular toy, and Sotriffer is the only one that has recuperated the doll manufacture. Starting from a drawing, she carves smiling figures from wooden blocks. The dolls’ heights range from one centimeter up to one meter, and their strong expressions are the result of many hours of work and great attention to details.
