Marilena Cucunato, artistically known as Marye Mislay, is an illustrator and art therapist living and working in Cosenza. The name Marye Mislay originated as a sonic and identity-based variation of her real name: an evocative transformation that allowed her to build a personal artistic language while maintaining an authentic connection with herself.

Her visual research develops through watercolor, ink, mixed media, and digital illustration, creating a poetic and deeply emotional imagery focused on themes of femininity, motherhood, and inner transformation. Her works, created both by hand and with digital tools, inhabit a suspended space between art and introspection: human figures intertwine with botanical and animal elements, giving rise to delicate, symbolic, and immersive visual narratives.

Alongside illustration, she also creates acrylic and pastel paintings on canvas, large-scale works in which color and material acquire an intense and physical presence. This creative universe is reflected in the expression The Fox’s Step, a name that evokes the deep connection with nature and with the green environment from which her artistic practice, workshops, and art therapy paths dedicated to mothers and children emerge.

The fox, a central symbol in her poetics, embodies a discreet, intuitive, and free spirit: an animal capable of moving along the boundary between the wild world and the human one. It is precisely this sensitivity that runs through each of her projects, transforming the creative gesture into a space of listening, slowness, and emotional care.
