Daniel Mauceri – Arte Pupara dal 1978 is a craft workshop based in Syracuse, in the heart of Ortigia, where Daniel continues the tradition of the Opera dei Pupi together with his family. Raised among wood, paints and scripts, he inherited his passion from his grandfather Alfredo Vaccaro and his craftsmanship from his father Umberto Mauceri, blending family teachings with a contemporary sensibility in a balance between memory and innovation.
In the workshop on Via della Giudecca, Sicilian puppets in the Syracuse style take shape, entirely handcrafted and restored, destined both for the performances of the family association and for private collections and international museums. Alongside production, Daniel Mauceri oversees the staging of the Opera dei Pupi, with a modular mobile theatre that makes it possible to perform the Carolingian cycle, stories of saints, myths, tragedies and Shakespearean works, thanks to collaborations with prominent authors and actors.
The workshop is also a place of experience and transmission: it organises puppet-making workshops and immersive guided tours, offering visitors the opportunity to discover the secrets of puppet theatre, recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Alongside the puppet tradition, the atelier also works in papier-mâché to create sacred statues, including life-size figures, as well as jewellery and ornaments inspired by chivalric imagery. A project that safeguards the heritage of Syracuse while renewing it with dedication and a strong family spirit.
