Lara De Sio is a ceramist based in Venice. Born in Bolzano in 1968, she studied architecture at IUAV University in Venice and worked as an architect in Italy and the Netherlands, and later as a designer in the Murano-based manufacturers Venini first, and Barovier & Toso later.
Lara began taking ceramic courses in the 1980s, between Bolzano, Venice, Umbria and Tuscany. Her first exhibition was in 2005, and throughout her career she has exhibited in important national and international ceramic shows, exhibitions and biennials.
Today she lives and works in Venice: in her workshop in the Cannaregio district, she makes both functional and artistic objects, such as vases and sculptures, all made by hand with white semi-refractory clay and employing the colombino technique.
The monochromatic decorations of her pieces are mainly obtained with the smoking technique, combined with the use of matrices made of fabric or paper, or again with layers of liquid clay applied to the object previously fired as a cookie, and then fired again with the “naked raku” technique and its reduction. In other cases, the objects are coated with engobes and etched while still raw, or polished with marble sponges after being fired as a cookie.
Artistic research, experimentation with techniques and exquisite craftsmanship make each piece truly unique.
