Mattia Riva is a luthier specialising in the construction and restoration of classical quartet string instruments, namely violas, violins and cellos.
He is a graduate of the “Civica Scuola di Liuteria” (Civic School of Violin making) in Milan, where he trained under the guidance of maestro Luca Primon. He then refined his craft by attending advanced courses, particularly in the restoration of musical instruments, with renowned experts Carlos Arcieri and Gabriele Negri at the “Accademia Perosi” (Perosi Academy) in Biella. He also specialised in varnishing, repairing and cracking bows, acoustic tuning and the most modern techniques of relief on historical instruments with RTV resins.
He has participated in international competitions and exhibitions in Italy, France, Germany, China and Japan. He has been recognised for his achievements by being awarded two gold medals at the ANLAI competitions for professional violin makers (first prize cello in 2010 and first prize violin – replicas in 2011).
Today, he runs a workshop in Varese, where he makes and restores musical instruments, as well as offering bow-making and maintenance services, consultancy and rental. Since 2017, he has been teaching string instrument making at the same school where he graduated.
