The textile studio Prof. Cannas is located in the heart of the Gallura region, surrounded by the granitic mountains of Aggius. This atelier keeps the local textile tradition unaltered and alive, and is the result of an all-female line of experience: the studio was founded in 1997 as a co-operative and then incorporated in 2005 by the 10 founding partners. This small textile company was also the head of I.S.O.L.A.’s Experimental Center1 until the day of its closure, later on continuing to work inside the same beautiful historical building. Here, skilled artisans weave carpets in the old-fashion way, using horizontal looms and only locally sourced cotton or wool, and emphasizing the use of typical decorations such as geometric patterns or the local “a date” style.

The soul of Prof. Cannas textile workshop are Tomasina, Stefania and Giovanna, three artisans of great value and skill, passionately carrying on the art of weaving by using traditional and exclusively manual looms and working inside the former Centro Pilota Isola in Aggius, in the heart of the Gallura region (Sardinia). I first met them during an important documentation work, and since then, with their strong hued textiles and characteristic compositions, they participated in many projects I have overseen, proudly representing their community’s textile tradition.
