Renato Olivastri is a master inlayer and wood restorer. He started working in the 1970s, when he was only 14 years old, making custom-made furniture in workshops in northern Italy. After ten years of experience, he moved to Florence to attend the two-year furniture restoration course at the “Istituto per l’Arte e il Restauro” (Institute for Art and Restoration) ‘Palazzo Spinelli’. After finishing school, he went to work with his schoolmaster. They worked together for over ten years, fixing wooden objects, antique furniture, and wooden frames for paintings. They also worked on objects with inlays, especially in the Boulle style.
Today, Renato has his own workshop in the Santo Spirito district, where, in addition to restoration work, he also makes inlaid works and furniture.
He taught for many years at Palazzo Spinelli, but also at other universities and associations, both in Italy and abroad. Today, he offers courses and workshops to pass on the technique of marquetry and wood restoration to craftsmen and enthusiasts. He also realises customised and commissioned projects.
