Gianmaria Assandri is a master luthier. In his small workshop in Genoa, he makes and repairs plucked and stringed instruments, and also restores and reproduces antique ones. His main focus is on large instruments, such as violas da gamba, violons and double basses.
He approached the craft as a boy, repairing his guitar and experimenting independently. Then his passion for music and manual work led him to frequent, from 1980, the workshop of established luthiers in the city, especially Federico Lowenberger. Alongside the master, he learnt the secrets of the profession, and began to add violin-making as a sideline to his first job.
After many years of work and experience, in 2008 he crowned his dream and opened his workshop in the historical centre of Genoa, where today, in addition to his ordinary activity, he also dedicates himself to experimentation, making unique and special instruments, and reproductions and revisitations of period instruments.
