Thierry Scandella is a young wood carver.
His passion for the trade dates back to his childhood, when he started crafting his first creations using the manual fretwork technique. He later studied carpentry and sculpture by joining the “Bottega Scuola” programme, sponsored by the Aosta Valley Region, and became interested in carving by attending a class to perfect this technique.
After graduating, Thierry worked for an important company, devoting himself to the manual finishing of friendship cups and “grolle”, typical Valdostan crafts.
In 2023, at last, he opened his own workshop in L’Outre-Pont, a hamlet of Villeneuve: his production ranges from small everyday functional objects, such as picture frames, wedding favours and boxes, to more unique pieces, customizable in every detail or even made-to-measure, all made mainly out of walnut, maple, cherry or larch wood, sometimes combined with horn. He also specializes in working with birch bark, with which he decorates unusual snuff boxes, and he is the only craftsman in the whole region still carrying on this extremely rare technique. He regularly takes part in trade fairs and exhibitions, in Aosta Valley and elsewhere.
