Officina Sociale Avventura di Latta is a social inclusion project aimed at the training and employment of political refugees, asylum seekers and the fragile who are welcomed into the Officina premises to learn a trade. In the workshop, metalworking techniques handed down by tinsmiths and Neapolitan goldsmiths are taught to participants to create jewels, design objects, lamps, sculptures and artistic works. The art of working metal educates the eye in seeing beauty and the creative process stimulates the mind: by passing down traditional skills, the trainers in the Officina are able to recuperate the memory of important traditions to give the trainees the opportunity to acquire skills through learning these traditional crafts.

The educational role of art, even when working in conditions of extreme discomfort conserves all its potential, opens breaches, acts as bridges between different cultures. Thus when simple metal is transformed into a jewel to be worn, then we know that dreams can become reality! This project was born from an idea by the architect Riccardo Dalisi: other projects were later added by other leading Campania-based designers and I also donated some of my designs for a collection of jewellery that will be produced in collaboration with the Scuola della Porcellana and the Real Fabbrica di Capodimonte. A method to make art a means of social integration and working together in the discovery of ones own potential to foster new human relations.
